- Who are you, where do you come from, where are you going?
My name is Yvonne Brown. I am 34 years old. I was born and raised in Chicago, IL. I am going nowhere but UP. To achieve my goals and better my career as an Educator.
- How long have you been teaching with Apollo?
I’ve been teaching with Apollo for 4 months. About to start the new school year with them. Looking forward to work many years with the company.
- What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned since you started teaching?
I learned to accept and treat students as unique human beings. Meaning to respect them and react to them fairly and humanely.
- How do you motivate your students to succeed?
I let them know that they can do whatever they set their mind to do, to always be respectful, and to help them reach their goals. I always go with the motto “If at first you don’t succeed, try try again!”
- If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I would love to have the power to read minds. To get a better understanding of people and what they’re actually going through.
- What is your most memorable memory from your time as an Apollo instructor?
The love I received from the students. My mother always told me that I was a kid magnet. And the way the kids gravitated to me made me feel special.
- If you could retire tomorrow and never have to worry about money again, what would you do with your time?
I would like to travel the world. Visit different countries and learn their culture.
- What’s your go-to technique for dealing with ‘handful students’?
I give them space to get themselves together. I’ll ask what’s the problem and if there is anything I can do to help. Sometimes kids just need attention, so I’ll have them assist me with our daily activities – like a teacher’s assistant. That usually cheers them up.
- What is an unusual place you have been to?
I’ve never been to anything unusual. Every place I’ve gone was my decision.
- Do you have a talent that not many people know about?
I’m pretty much an open book. But I believe I’m talented in singing and dancing. My personality is a talent itself.
- What’s your #1 teaching tip?
Show enthusiasm and passion for teaching. Meaning caring about your student’s growth and also developing strong relationships.
- What’s your favorite classroom Attention Getter?
Depending on the age group I’ll say “1,2,3 eyes on me” or “If you can hear me, clap once, if you can hear me, clap twice.”
- What is something interesting that you’re involved in, outside of Apollo After School?
Outside from Apollo I do security. I work different events such as parties, festivals, and concerts.
- How do you spend your summer breaks?
I spend my summer breaks working and spending time with my family. I have to keep busy, or I’ll get bored.
- Star Wars, Star Trek, or they’re both lame?
They’re both lame in my opinion. Lol. I haven’t seen not 1 episode of either. I remember when I was younger my aunt used to watch it and I’d fall right to sleep.
- What do you like most about working with Apollo?
I like that I’m able to be around kids. Working with kids is my peace!
