Our Employee of the Month is A’layeah Thompson!
A’layeah runs a Movie Makers course at multiple Apollo schools. Her class was so popular at summer camp, that we asked her to teach it at five different locations during the school year (teaching at each school one day a week) to bring her fun and expertise to as many children as possible. A’layeah works with the students to create their own movies and learn about film production, and always brings great energy and fun to her classes!
A’layeah, thank you for being such an outstanding employee and teacher.
To show our appreciation for your dedication and hard work – please check your email this week for a special gift from us.
Check out our interview with A’layeah below:
- Who are you, where do you come from, where are you going?
My name is A’layeah Joisanne Thompson, and I am from Montclair, New Jersey. As for where I’m going… I’m going to become a household name in the TV/Film industry. Eventually, opening up a mentor program teaching the art of filmmaking and acting.
- How long have you been teaching with Apollo?
I have proudly been teaching with Apollo for 8 incredible months. Learning something new each day!
- What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned since you started teaching?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned during my journey with Apollo is the importance of adaptability. Teaching media at a beginner level requires me to continuously explore what resonates with my students. Each class presents new opportunities to discover innovative techniques tailored to their learning styles, and I’m amazed at how much I learn alongside them.
- How do you motivate your students to succeed?
I have put in place into our daily routine a “quote of the day” and an “affirmations box” to encourage my students to become the best versions of themselves. It’s a powerful way to start the day with a positive mindset.
- If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I would love the power of time travel! Imagine all the knowledge and experiences I could gather to share with my students.
- What is your most memorable memory from your time as an Apollo instructor?
My most unforgettable experience as an Apollo instructor was organizing the “Apollo REEL Connections: Dance and Film Festival” this past summer. Watching the scholars present their short films, showcasing their creativity and hard work, was absolutely amazing! We also had a fantastic dance performance throughout the festival which was choreographed by the dance instructors, and to top it all off, we welcomed an inspiring guest speaker, child actress Sa’Raya Paris Johnson. Her journey in the entertainment industry resonated with our students, especially when one of them shared their aspiration of becoming a writer/director—just like I did at their age! Those moments of inspiration and connection are truly what teaching is all about.
- If you could retire tomorrow and never have to worry about money again, what would you do with your time?
I would spend quality time with my family creating memories and traveling around the world! Additionally, I would dedicate my time to mentoring young talents who are passionate about the arts.
- What’s your go-to technique for dealing with ‘handful students’?
My approach is to assess the situation and understand what’s causing the behavior. I believe in open communication, so I engage in conversation with them and ask questions to get to the root of the issue. Often, students just need someone to listen and know that their voice matters.
- What is an unusual place you have been to?
I had the opportunity to work as a background actor on the set of the fictional infamous Arkham State Hospital for the HBO Max series “The Penguin! It was an experience unlike any other.
- Do you have a talent that not many people know about?
I used to be a basketball player in middle school! It was a fun time, and I still enjoy the game in my free time.
- What’s your #1 teaching tip?
Always aim to inspire! Share your own unique gifts and talents with your students; it’s a wonderful way to ignite their passion for learning.
- What’s your favorite classroom Attention Getter?
My favorite attention-getter is a call-and-response chant: “If you hear my voice clap once, if you hear my voice clap twice!” For the younger kids, I might say, “If you hear my voice, touch your head, nose, toes, etc!” This keeps our after school environment engaging and full of energy.
- What is something interesting that you’re involved in, outside of Apollo After School?
In addition to teaching, I work as a Production Assistant and actress on various TV shows and films. I also love to write, direct, and produce my own creative projects!
- How do you spend your summer breaks?
My summer breaks are a blend of hard work and cherished moments with family and friends. I love to make the most of that time.
- Star Wars, Star Trek, or they’re both lame?
Star Wars, all the way! May the Force be with us!
- What do you like most about working with Apollo?
What I cherish most about my role with Apollo is I feel that I positively, along with my co-workers, impact the lives of the children we teach. Each day offers a new opportunity to inspire and nurture their creativity and that’s something I truly value.
